Introduction to G8 Mont Temblant Canada

We are pleased and honoured to welcome G8 Ministers, Heads of Delegation and delegates to Canada for the G8 Justice and Interior Ministers’ Meeting.

Our mission – protecting society from international terrorism and crime – is a challenge indeed. Since September 11th, our efforts have been intensified to meet this challenge.

Our Leaders’ statement, released September 19, 2001, reaffirmed the G8 commitment to work jointly in the fight against terrorism. We have chosen to focus our discussion on two important aspects of terrorism: terrorist financing and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear weapons.

Terrorism is not the only threat we face. Advances in technology, for example, are being exploited by terrorists and criminals alike to threaten public safety. We also need to consider the convergence of crime and terrorism, and how we can harness resources to effectively combat both. We must also continue our important work in protecting our children from exploitation on the Internet.

Our efforts over the coming days will be critical in forming discussions for our Leaders in Kananaskis, Alberta and beyond.

As Ministers of Justice and the Interior, protecting public safety is our key responsibility, while respecting the rights and social values that we all hold dear. With the focus and determination of G8 members, we are confident that this meeting will be productive and insightful.

The Honourable Martin Cauchon
Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada

The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay
Solicitor General of Canada
